Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha was founded by Mahatma Gandhiji in 1918 at Madras (now Chennai) for propagation of Hindi in the south. Since Hindi, in the pre-independence days, was almost at the centre stage of the Freedom Movement, people in great numbers came forward willingly to learn Hindi. Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha became a household name so much so that the Central Government thought it fit to introduce a Bill in Parliament to declare the Sabha an "Institution of National Importance". The Bill was passed and became Act 14 of 1964, which declared Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha an "Institution of National Importance".

With this, the Sabha gained "University-like" status, by dint of which it is a regular member of the "Association of Indian Universities", "Commonwealth Universities", and finds a place in the list of Universities recognized by the "University Grants Commission".

Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha, Karnataka, Dharwad — a branch of Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha, Madras — is in the forefront of propagation of Hindi. With changing times, it has also ventured into general, technical, and medical education.

Accordingly, it added to its objectives the provision of Medical and Technical Education.
